Gear up for a girls’ trip

A girls’ getaway is always something to look forward to, whether you’re old friends, sisters or the ultimate multigen trio of gran, mom and daughter.

If you love the idea of putting together a girls’ trip, there’s no better time than Women’s Day on 9th August. Not only is it a holiday, but a special time to celebrate all those legendary ladies in your life.

Ready to hit the road? Here’s what we recommend:

Head to the mountains

For ladies who love the outdoors, there’s no better place for a girls’ trip than the Drakensberg. There are several day hikes to tackle, which are well-marked and maintained. But if you’d prefer to don your comfy clothes instead of your hiking shoes, cosy up close to the fire with board games and bottomless hot chocolate.

Where to stay: Little Switzerland Resort. Pet-friendly chalets, picture-perfect views. Need we say more?

Game view with the gals

Don your khaki and leopard print and wrangle your girls for a getaway in the wilderness. From expert-led game drives with sundowners on cue to stargazing around the fire, there are more than enough bonding opportunities to be found in the bush.

Where to stay: Finfoot Lake Resort, just a 90-minute drive from Johannesburg. Add a twist to traditional game viewing with a Segway safari. It’s easy enough for beginners.

Ladies who lunch

If you’re a group of ladies who love to wine and dine, there’s no better place to go than the Cape Winelands. Just imagine it: glorious mountain views, rolling vineyards and mouthwatering cuisine. This region is just the place to spend your days catching up whilst sipping ice-cold Chenin in the sunshine. Wine-loving ladies, assemble!

Where to stay: Le Franschhoek Hotel & Spa in Franschhoek. There’s a spa on-site and the ultra-chic, top-rated Le Verger restaurant.

Beachside bonding

Love the idea of a low-key beach escape with the girls? Make your way to the Dolphin Coast in KwaZulu-Natal. There’s no better place to sleep in late and spend your afternoons sprawled out in the sun, be it on the beach or by the pool. Seaside spa session followed by cocktails, anyone?

Where to stay: Zimbali Lodge. It’s glitzy but genuinely relaxed and laid back. It’s also within leaping distance from the buzzing seaside hub of Ballito.

Memory making in the Mother City

What better place for the ultimate girls’ getaway than the Mother City? There’s plenty to see and do, from exploring that iconic table-shaped mountain to moseying around the V&A or taking a dip in the Atlantic – only if you dare!

Where to stay? The Peninsula All-Suite Hotel in Sea Point. Strolla Restaurant offers top-tier cocktails, but there’s also a sushi bar on-site and a gin trolley to explore.
