Winter in SA – Escape or Embrace it?
Winter may be on its way, but it's always hot somewhere in South Africa. So, if you're a sun worshipper dreading the cold, you'll still find plenty of places to revel in its warmth.
But if all you want is to layer up and chuck a few logs on the fire, there's no shortage of hidden boltholes where you can do that instead.
Whether you want to escape or embrace the chill this winter, here's where we recommend you go:
Catch that South Coast sun
Brighten up your winter blues along the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. The best part about this region is the warm Indian Ocean, so leave your wetsuit behind and tempt yourself with a dip. There are plenty of rock pools to keep the little ones occupied at quieter spots like Scottburgh Beach, just a stone's throw from The Blue Marlin Hotel.
Cosy up in the Cape Winelands
If you love snuggling up when the weather cools, make a beeline for The Cape Winelands. Don your chunky scarf and coat, then hop on the fabulous Franschhoek Wine Tram if wine is more of your thing. You can visit several in one day while sampling the region's best reds. Best place to bed down? Le Franschhoek Hotel & Spa.
Bundle up in the Berg
How about a gathering in the Berg with friends or family? Just picture it: roaring indoor fires, board games, mountain views and plenty of hot chocolate (or wine if you prefer!). It's just the place for those looking to break out their winter attire. The best part? Off-season rates at hidden gems like Little Switzerland Resort in Bergville.
Winter in the Madikwe wilderness
The best time for game viewing in South Africa is always during the winter months when the bush thins out, making it harder for the animals to hide. If you're heading between Johannesburg and Gaborone, Madikwe River Lodge is just the place to hang up the car keys. There are game drives, and bush walks galore, with roaring boma dinners to look forward to.
Beat the cold at Zimbali Beach
If you want to milk that warmer weather before it goes, grab your sunnies and sandals, then head up to the Elephant Coast in KwaZulu-Natal. Snap up a stay at Zimbali Lodge, where you can wiggle your toes in the sand or flop down on the sunlounger with something crisp and cool. The year-round tropical weather and warm Indian Ocean water are guaranteed to cure those winter blues.
